Alberta NEAHR Graduate Awards

The AB NEAHR is now accepting applications for Graduate Student Awards

Call for 2014 Graduate Student Awards is open

Alberta Network Environments for Aboriginal Health Research (AB NEAHR) 2014 Student Awards:

The Alberta Network Environments for Aboriginal Health Research is funded under an initiative of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) – Institute of Aboriginal Peoples’ Health (IAPH). A purpose of the initiative is to develop a network of supportive research environments across Canada that will facilitate development of capacity in Aboriginal health research at all levels. To support capacity development the AB NEAHR provides scholarship funding for graduate level students whose research addresses one or more aspects of Aboriginal peoples’ health.

Student awards are open to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal PhD or Master's level graduates working in Aboriginal peoples' health research with an Aboriginal community focus or carried out in partnership with an Aboriginal or Indigenous community. Funding priority is given to graduate students involved in Aboriginal peoples’ health related projects.

NEAHR promotes projects that have the ability to:

  • Contribute to current Aboriginal peoples' health priorities
  • Conduct community-based research with Aboriginal communities as full partners
  • Provide training for the community to increase their capacity to identify and address their own health issues
  • Respect all ways of knowing as they apply to capacity building, training and partnerships
  • Maintain the highest ethical standards

Funding Amounts:

A limited amount of funding is available for 2014-2015 awards. Maximum funding is $17,000/year for PhD level students and $14,500/year for Master's level students. Students applying for renewal or a second award must prove significant progress in their program. Tuition costs will be included as part of the award. Budgeted expenses cannot include administrative, overhead or operating costs of research projects. Students are encouraged to secure additional funding to top up their stipends with support from their supervisor or external funding opportunities. Funding decisions are made competitively on the basis of merit, need and availability of funds; thus awards may be prorated.

Funding Criteria:

Student funding is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents at the time of application who are from or are studying in Alberta. For additional funding criteria please access the link below.
